Founded in 1971 as the UEFA Cup, the Europa League brings together major teams from the major European leagues.
The format of the competition has been the same as the Champions League for a long time but it will change from the 2021-22 season. The competition starts with a group stage between 36 teams divided into 8 groups. Each team plays 6 matches, determining its ranking within the group. The first team of each group is qualified for the final phase while the second team is now requi red to participate in a play-off against the teams that have been relegated to the Europa League following their 3rd place in the Champions League group phase. The final phase is then played between 16 teams with two legs match es until the semi-final. The final is played on a neutral pitch determined in adv ance by UEFA.

The most successful club in the competition is Sevilla with 7 titles (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2023). The club from Andalusia has left an indelible mark on the competition by becoming the only club that has manag ed to retain its title 3 seasons in a row from 2014 to 2016. The competition has seen several eras of dominance by some leagues starting with the English (Tottenham, Liverpool, Ipswich) and the German (Monchengladbach, Frank furt). Then came the golden age of Italian soccer with 8 champion clubs bet ween 1989 and 1999, including Juventus, Inter Milan and Parma. Since the early 2000s, Spanish clubs have regularly dominated the competition with 7 titles acquired between 2010 and 2020 (Atletico Madrid, Seville, Villarreal).

Some Ligue 1 Uber Eats teams have managed to distinguish themselves in the Europa League. Although Marseille has never won the title, the club has reached the final 3 times in its history (1999, 2004 and 2018). Bordeaux also played a final in this competition against Bayern Munchen in 1996. Despite the presence of famous French internationals such as Zidane, Lizarazu or Dugarry, the Bavarian club won quite easily in the first leg (2-0) and in the second (3-1). Other French teams were lucky enough to participate in the Europa League. Thus, Lyon (2017), Lens (2000) or Monaco (1997) have all played a semi-final in this competition.
